The gynaecological-obstetric doctor studies the changes that occur within the woman’s body during the nine months of pregnancy, during the stages of childbirth and the immediate period after childbirth.
It also deals with all pathological conditions that may arise at the expense of the mother and the fetal-placental system.
Gynecology studies the physiology and pathology of the female genital system in all age groups, from puberty to the fertile period up to the menopause and the period following it.
Villa Margherita has a 24-hour service of professional midwives.

Pregnancy tests

First trimester obstetric ultrasound
(between the 6th and 10th week):
provides important information on the location of the pregnancy, the number of embryos,
correct dating of the pregnancy,
the presence of embryonic cardiac activity and the state of the pelvic organs.

Harmony test
is a direct analysis of fetal DNA in maternal blood for the screening of trisomy 21, 18 and 13 and sex chromosome alteration chromosomes.

First trimester screening test (Bi-test)
(between the 11th and 13th weeks plus six days):
is a screening test useful for the calculation of the individual risk for Down’s syndrome
and trisomy 18 and 13, through blood sampling and evaluation of specific ultrasound parameters. It also calculates the individual risk of preeclampsia, intrauterine growth retardation and preterm delivery.

Pre-morphological ultrasound
(between the 16th and 18th week of pregnancy): shows some major fetal malformations.

Morphological ultrasound and screening for second trimester preeclampsia
(between week 21 and 23):
provides information on the morphology of the main fetal organs and highlights the malformations that can be diagnosed ultrasonographically. It assesses the risk of developing preeclampsia before week 34.

Obstetric ultrasound with flowmetry
and screening for third-quarter preeclampsia
(between week 28 and 36):
allows the assessment of fetal growth and maternal-fetal exchanges through flowmetry. Assesses the risk of developing preeclampsia in the third trimester.

Villocentesis (during the 12th week) and amniocentesis (between the 16th and 18th weeks): these tests, through the collection of chorionic villi and amniotic fluid respectively, allow the diagnosis of chromosomal abnormalities and of some genetic diseases.
